On May 09, 2017, Voces Latinas will host its 15th Annual HIV Women’s Luncheon. Every year this event brings together women, men, and stakeholders such as community based organizations, department of health representatives, elected officials, and other community partners to discuss the current status of HIV/AIDs and violence within and outside of our Latino community. The focus of the luncheon is to learn more about HIV/AIDS prevention and connect to resources. The topics range from violence prevention, immigration, mental health, and many others as determined by the emerging needs of our women participants. Notably, it is the only event in the borough of Queens that focuses on the intersecting issues of violence, HIV and women.
We continue to keep this event alive so that women feel heard and included in HIV and violence prevention efforts. The event is a bi-lingual event because women from all cultural backgrounds attend, as Queens is the most diverse community in the nation. The event has grown from 10 attendees in the back yard of a church to over 200 attendees.
