This year, Voces Latinas turns 15 years old.
We will be celebrating by having a Quinceañera ceremony for the organization on October 11, 2018, at Renaissance in Astoria.
In the Latino community, a Quinceañera is similar to a rite of passage from girlhood to womanhood. It involves Godparents, family members and close friends, those that have contributed in one way or another to the development and growth of a young woman. As a 15-year-old organization, we too are transitioning from a young developing organization to one that has a formed identity and sustainable presence in the community for long term existence.
To get to 15 years in these tumultuous times of funding cuts, negative sentiment toward immigrants, healthcare reform, etc. speaks to the dedication and hard work of our Board and employees.
I consider myself to be the luckiest Executive Director having a team such as the Voces Latinas team. As immigrants themselves, my team knows first- hand the importance of healthcare, prevention, high risk, mental health, for the survival of immigrants. We can’t get any more culturally competent than this team.
We are currently looking for Madrinas/Padrinos (Sponsors) to support the event. Sponsors will receive a table for 10, be included in our program as a Level I sponsor, and be involved in the ceremony.
Please contact Nathaly Rubio-Torio, Executive Director for more information.
